Like many millennials, I am regularly presented with evidence as to why the things I grew up liking are actually problematic because of their creators. See: Bill Cosby, Michael Jackson, Neil Gaiman (that son of a bitch), J.K. Rowling — the list is, unfortunately, quite long. Rowling’s descent into hatred of marginalized groups is especially tough considering how much of a haven Hogwarts was for me and many others in our adolescent years. I have continued to enjoy my rereads of Harry Potter well into adulthood and often wonder if Rowling has read her own work, which is packed with themes of love and inclusivity, of late.

The misdeeds of our artistic heroes, however, is not why we are here today. We are here because it occurs to me that some who enjoyed Harry’s adventures through a school of magic might be in search of similarly magical works that are (so far) written by less complicated authors.
